Eye conditions we diagnose and manage
During your comprehensive eye exam, we look beyond your prescription to evaluate the health and function of your eyes. Depending on your needs, testing may include detailed retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, visual field testing, and electroretinography (ERG).
Our technology helps our doctors capture detailed information about the retina, optic nerve, and how your visual system is functioning. This allows us to detect subtle changes that may not affect your day-to-day vision yet, establish a baseline for future visits, and monitor conditions with greater precision over time.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. It can make vision look blurry, hazy, or less vibrant and may make reading, driving at night, or recognizing faces more difficult. Cataracts most often develop with age, though diabetes, certain medications, previous eye surgery, and other health conditions can also contribute.
Our doctors monitor cataracts during routine eye exams and help determine when a cataract evaluation or surgery consultation may be appropriate. Following cataract surgery, we can provide post-operative care in our office.
Some patients develop posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery. This happens when a cloudy film forms behind the new intraocular lens, making vision seem blurry again. We offer YAG laser capsulotomy, a quick, painless in-office procedure that uses a laser to clear the film. It is typically a one-time treatment.
Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This is called diabetic retinopathy, and it may develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Diabetes can also increase the risk of diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma.
We use detailed retinal imaging and ERG to evaluate retinal health and monitor diabetes-related changes. ERG testing provides information about retinal function and can help identify a patient’s risk for diabetic retinopathy.
A regular diabetic eye exam helps our doctors detect changes early, track your eye health over time, and recommend next steps when needed.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve, often due to pressure inside the eye. Because glaucoma may progress without obvious symptoms, routine eye exams and specialized testing are important for early detection and ongoing management.
We use visual field testing, OCT, and ERG to evaluate the optic nerve and monitor changes over time. These tests help us understand how glaucoma may be affecting your vision and guide your treatment plan.
We also offer selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), a quick, painless in-office laser treatment that can lower eye pressure. SLT stimulates the eye’s natural drainage system to work more efficiently. For some patients, it can reduce or eliminate the need for daily glaucoma drops; for others, it is used alongside drops to lower pressure further. SLT can be repeated in the future when appropriate.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. It can make reading, recognizing faces, driving, and seeing fine details more difficult.
Dry AMD is the more common form and often progresses gradually. Wet AMD is less common but can cause rapid vision loss and needs prompt attention.
Our doctors use Optos® retinal imaging, OCT, and ERG testing to evaluate retinal health and monitor patients with macular degeneration. We may also recommend Nordic Naturals ProDHA Eye® as part of an eye-health routine. If advanced care or treatment is needed, we coordinate with the appropriate retinal specialist.
